A Lenten Experience for Children and Families

Tuesday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m.

Come hear the story of how God created us all from stardust and calls us to walk in love. Families are invited to join us for a short (less than 30 minutes), interactive service where children can learn about the significance of Ash Wednesday in hands-on and age appropriate ways. Enjoy the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper after this Family Lenten Experience.

Why Ashes?

Christians have been using ashes as part of Ash Wednesday since the ninth century, according to the Episcopal Dictionary of the Church. Ashes blessed for used on Ash Wednesday are made from burned palms from previous Palm Sunday services.

The imposition of ashes is when ashes are drawn in the sign of a cross on participants' foreheads as a sign of "mortality and penitence." The ashes are imposed with the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 265)
